Great Britain
were last in this competition in 2004 where we got
through to the final. There was a lovely blend of youth and experience in
the squad, with several new faces arriving since our 2004 debut. We also had a
new captain in Damaris Cooke, a job which she carried out very well indeed. It
was a fantastic opportunity for Head Coach George McGowan to experiment and get
to know the players' strengths and weaknesses.
GB started off slowly in the
competition, with a 2-1 loss to Chelmsford Ladies. We were 2-0 down but came
back strongly, hoping to at least draw the game. Unfortunately, we ran out of
time (each game only lasting 40 minutes), but we continued to improve over the
rest of the tournament. We beat Leyland Ladies (who later dropped out of the
competition) and Middleton Colts, then we drew our last game against
Rochdale to guarantee second place in the group. It
wasn't enough to go through to the semi-finals proper, but we secured a place
in the plate semi finals against North Shields, whom we went on to beat 5-0.
We played Morecambe Ladies in the
plate final and they were very difficult to play against, being very physical
in the game. There was a chance to win the game late in the second half with a
penalty, but we missed it and the game went to a penalty shoot out. We lost
4-3, but our coach was very pleased with how the whole weekend had gone and how
well the squad played over the two days. It was such an invaluable experience
that we will be entering the competition in 2009 as preparation for the
Deaflympics – let's hope we can go one better next time!
