GB Football nominated for a Signature award

GB Football have been nominated for the Organisational Achievement award as part of the Signature Awards evening which will be hosted in London on Thursday 12th November to recognise excellence in improving communications between deaf and hearing people.

GB Football were in the dark ages around and since the fiasco of the European Football Championships collaspe in Sheffield, 2001. Since then, GB Football reached a glorious high with the Men grabbing a Gold medal and the Women with their first interational competition a Bronze mdeal at the 20th Deaflympics in 2005. The Men then went on to achieve a Silver medal at the 6th European Championships in 2007 and were favourites at the 21st Deaflympics but were shockingly knocked out of the group stages, with the Women coming a respectable 4th.

GB Football has no doubt come a long way in the last 10 years with numerous volunteers on board, a new website, and getting Ian Holloway as Patron on board behind our cause, and most of all, its amazing achievements in international football competitions. Pride has been restored in GB Football and our army of fans continues to grow, often travel long distances to show their support.

What is remarkable is the GB Football is self-funded with little or no help from the FA for unfortunate political reasons. It must be said that the GB Football is mainly strongly Deaf led, somthing which is surprisingly an obstacle in many cases where disability is often handed over to able people to lead. The Deaf involved in GB Football are experienced, knowledgable, multi-communicators and qualified to run a Football community in difficult and often full of barriers conditions.

Jim Edwards, Chief Executive of Signature, said: Great Britain Deaf Football's continued commitment to working with deaf people and their enthusiasm for the awards really shows that our vision of a society in which deaf people have full access can become a reality.

"The Signature Annual Awards are about recognising excellence in communications between deaf and hearing people and we're looking forward to sharing these successes at the ceremony in London."
